Learn to Surf at Waco Surf
Waco Surf has two ways in for new surfers: Learn to Surf lessons for children from age 5, and The Coaster, a beginner wave for surfers aged 6 and up.
Learn to Surf (ages 5+)
Learn to Surf is designed for children. Instructors teach water safety and surfing fundamentals, then help push young surfers into gentle, rolling waves near the shore. Lessons run in small groups or as private lessons.
The Coaster: the beginner wave (ages 6+)
The Coaster is Waco Surf's beginner wave: a gentle ground-swell with an easy roll-in take-off. That gives you plenty of time to get to your feet and work on your balance. It's the first public session for teens and adults new to surfing.
What you need
- Swimming: there's no set age limit for surfing at Waco Surf, but every surfer must be a proficient swimmer.
- Safety gear: surfers need a US Coast Guard life jacket or a board leash. Anyone 52 inches tall or under must wear a life jacket.
- A signed waiver before you surf.
Moving up
Once you're riding The Coaster comfortably, the next wave is The Runner, a roll-in take-off with a long, clean wall for linking turns. Read more in our Waco Surf session types guide.
